Orval Day 2025

Join Merchant du Vin Saturday, March 22nd for Orval Day 2025!  Share your celebrations with #OrvalDay. Our charity for this year is National Forest Foundation.

Orval is a world-renowned Trappist ale with a cult following. Orval Day commemorates the legend of Princess Matilda, and thus the legendary Trappist beer Orval on the third Saturday of March every year.

Matilda lost her wedding ring in a spring along the Belgian countryside. She knelt to pray that her ring would be found when a trout swam up returning it. Matilda was grateful and donated the land to the church, naming it Orval, or golden valley.

2024 Winter Seasonals

This year’s winter seasonals are full of festivity. The Westmalle gift box is making a return alongside the refreshed Samuel Smith gift box and the reappearance of the Lindemans gift box after a brief hiatus. In Winter Welcome news, Samuel Smith is celebrating the Ale’s 35th anniversary.

The collectable label on Winter Welcome Ale this 35th anniversary year features the much-loved red robin. Despite the robin being such a popular symbol of winter goodwill, Samuel Smith has not previously pictured it on the Winter Welcome Ale label.

In the late 1800s, Victorian postmen wore red uniforms, earning them the nickname ‘robin redbreasts’. As Christmas drew near people all over the country eagerly awaited cards from loved ones delivered by their local ‘robin’. Thus the small bird’s fame was established as artists began illustrating Christmas cards with the birds delivering festive letters and cards.

We wish you a merry season full of joy and enjoyment of everything winter has to offer. Cheers!
